Is your car ready for Winter? | Big Cars | Chelmsford, Witham & Suffolk

Getting your car ready for winter, what you need to know.

There’s a few things that could save you if something was to happen, have you thought about some of these?

  • A blanket
  • Warm clothes
  • Food and water
  • Shovel
  • Torch
  • De-icer
  • Window scraper
  • High-vis vest
  • Warning triangle.

Checking your car can be one of the most important things, making sure that the crucial points are safe to take out on the cold and wet roads. Here’s a list of things that need to be looked at, either by yourself or a garage.

  • Car battery, check it’s fully charged.
  • Antifreeze, this prevents the water in your engine’s cooling system from getting too cold and freezing, so needs to be topped up/replaced.
  • Windscreen wipers, keep a clean windscreen and make sure your wiper blades aren’t getting low.
  • Tyres, one of the most important parts due to the contact with the road. It’s not compulsory to use winter tyres, although it’s a good idea and is recommended when below 7 degrees. But you need to make sure you have a minimum of 3mm tread and they’re suitably inflated.
  • Most of all, just check the weather before you leave. Is it safe to drive, or can you wait?
